Secret Tales of our Trees and Forests

Premised on UN sustainable Goal no 15, this interdisciplinary creative writing program will playfully weave in science, social sciences, and arts to explore the world of trees for the elementary groups.

The starting point of this beautiful arboreal journey will be engaging book discussions, captivating video clips (BBC / Natural Geography) or storytelling sessions on tree folklores of various countries. Followed by an orientation to Sustainable Development Goals in an age-appropriate fun and engaging way with special emphasis on UN SDG 15.

Academic Learning Goals

Language Art:
Learn to observe and adopt a sensory writing style following Nature’s own curriculum.
They will have a playful but rigorous work with language.
With guided facilitation they will connect dots and exercise their creative writing muscles.
They will illustrate and create craft on their written pieces.
The session will end with an opportunity for students to share their writing with others.

Nature Science
They will explore how trees grow and survive
They will make a visual and verbal notes of different types of forests
They will collect and collate tree facts: tallest, oldest, biggest, and widest trees
They will soak up why trees are so important to us

Goals beyond Academic learning

1. Nurturing the sense of wonder:
Nurturing the sense of wonder promotes curiosity!:
How a tiny seed fall from the mother tree and goes down the soil and sprouts into a tiny little sapling, how a treefrog hops on to a tree trunk, how a busy bee settles on a flower to suck the nectar; the universe holds unlimited lessons for them!
If we can make them see this and get fascinated by how all these are so connected to each other, it will lead to a desire for deeper understanding.

2. Learning to notice small things in our surrounding:
The art of noticing is a skill.
If inculcated early, it will last a lifetime. They learn to notice how things in the natural world change over time. They develop a habit to pause and see these small moments. These encourage them to develop an awareness and appreciation for the world around them.

3. Learn Side By Side:
Learning that occur without the intention to learn is always deeper
What a child is looking at more closely ignoring the chaos around is his innate attitude towards science. Simply by stepping outside in the open, asking questions about observations, and navigating ways to find the answers to the questions they don’t know— they are bringing the scientific process in action, unknowingly.
And then when prompted to express them in their self-authored prose or poem, they are foraging the right words and constructing apt phrases, in the process inadvertently building their vocabulary and trying to find the correct grammatical way to proudly express to the world around them. An interdisciplinary learning happens naturally and spontaneously.

The culmination of this creative journey will be a showcasing their creative expressions (Writings and paintings) of the Natural wonder through their awareness

Wordplay is an excellent creative writing class. Though online now, its focus has been not only on writing skills but on building interpersonal relationships between participants as well. My eleven year old says it's fun because the mentor is very versatile and creative, never leading to a dull moment during classes. Wordplay has been of great help during the lockdown period, keeping young mind creatively engaged
